Week 1

WK 1 Discussion: OB (Organizational Behavior) at Work:

Now that you’ve read Chapter 1 and the Trader Joe’s case, how can you grow your OB skills in the workplace? Let’s explore this as you respond to the following:

  • How will OB enhance your skills for managing individuals and teams in dynamic organizations?

WK 1 Reflect:

Rank 1 – 5, from least (1) to most critical (5), the leadership skills you feel are the most critical for business leaders to possess. Include a brief justification for your rankings in your responses.

 

Week 2

WK 2 Discussion: Using what you’ve learned from the video, make your case for diversity. Respond to only one of the following questions:

•           What benefits can a diverse workforce provide to an organization?

WK 2 Reflect:

Recall an experience at work when your perceptions (or someone else’s perceptions) were later found to be distorted. The following factors distort our perceptions:

a)      Stereotypes – Assign attributes to a group of people

b)     Halo effect – Uses one attribute to develop an overall impression of a person or situation

c)      Selective perception – Defines problems from one’s own point of view

d)     Projection – Assigns personal attributes to others

Watch this video, respond to the following questions:

•           How does emotional intelligence enhance the work environment?

•           How does emotional intelligence contribute to job satisfaction? Provide at least two examples.

  • Provide an example of a time when you made a decision regarding a work issue when procedures were not in place.

WK 6 Reflect:

Decision making and conflict resolution can consume a disproportionate amount of a manager’s time. Recognizing and preempting potential conflicts often proves to be the most effective resolution for them. Select one of the common causes of conflict from the list below and briefly explain your strategy for monitoring and resolving this problem.

As you explore your strengths and weaknesses, address these items in your responses:

  • What are your strengths?
